The Complete Rug Care & Maintenance Guide
Rug Care & Maintenance
Keep your rug looking its best with the right care.
With regular maintenance and the right cleaning techniques, you can help preserve the appearance, texture and longevity of your rug. Whether you're dealing with everyday dust, spills, pet hair or the natural characteristics of a new rug, these simple care tips will help you keep your rug looking beautiful.
Regular Rug Care
Vacuum Regularly
Regular vacuuming helps remove dust, dirt, hair and other debris before they become embedded in the rug fibres.
For most rugs, vacuuming once or twice a week is a good starting point. Rugs in high-traffic areas may require more frequent cleaning.
When vacuuming:
Use a suitable setting for your rug.
Avoid aggressive brushing on delicate or high-pile rugs.
Vacuum slowly rather than repeatedly going over the same area.
Pay particular attention to entrances and high-traffic areas.
Always follow the specific care instructions supplied with your rug.
Rotate Your Rug
Rotate your rug periodically to help distribute foot traffic, furniture pressure and exposure to sunlight more evenly.
A simple 180-degree rotation every few months can help reduce uneven wear and fading.
Dealing With Spills & Stains
Accidents happen. The most important thing is to act quickly.
1. Blot the spill
Use a clean, absorbent cloth to gently blot the affected area.
Do not rub.
Rubbing can push the spill deeper into the fibres and cause the stain to spread.
2. Remove solid material
If you've spilled food or another solid substance, carefully lift it away using a spoon or blunt edge.
3. Clean carefully
Use a suitable cleaning solution according to your rug's material and care instructions.
Always test cleaning products on a small, inconspicuous area first.
4. Blot again
Work gently from the outside of the affected area towards the centre.
5. Allow the rug to dry
Avoid saturating the rug with water and ensure the area dries thoroughly.
Important: Different rug materials require different cleaning methods. Always check the care label or product-specific instructions before using cleaning products.
New Rug Shedding
Some new rugs, particularly wool rugs, may naturally shed loose fibres.
This is generally a normal characteristic of the material and should reduce over time.
To manage shedding:
Vacuum regularly using a gentle setting.
Avoid pulling loose fibres by hand.
Do not use aggressive brushes.
Give the rug time to settle with normal use.
If you're unsure whether the amount of shedding is normal, contact us for advice.
Loose Threads & Sprouting
Occasionally, you may notice a small fibre or thread extending above the surface of your rug.
This is known as sprouting and can occur with certain rug constructions.
Never pull the thread.
Instead, carefully trim the protruding fibre level with the surrounding pile using appropriate scissors.
If you're concerned about a loose thread or believe the rug may be damaged, contact us before attempting to repair it.
Creases & Waves
Rugs can sometimes develop creases or waves after being rolled, folded or transported.
In many cases, these will gradually disappear as the rug settles.
To help your rug flatten:
Lay it flat on the floor.
Allow it time to settle naturally.
Place furniture carefully on affected areas if appropriate.
Avoid using excessive heat unless specifically recommended for your rug.
Never use an iron, hair dryer or other heat source on your rug unless the manufacturer's instructions specifically allow it.
Pile Shading & Colour Variation
You may notice areas of your rug appearing lighter or darker depending on the direction in which the fibres are lying.
This is often referred to as pile shading, tracking or watermarking.
It can be particularly noticeable when walking across the rug or viewing it from different directions.
In many cases, this is a natural characteristic rather than a defect.
Changing the direction of the pile with gentle brushing or vacuuming may alter its appearance.
Furniture & Your Rug
Heavy furniture can leave impressions in rug fibres.
To help minimise uneven wear:
Lift rather than drag furniture across your rug.
Use suitable furniture protectors where appropriate.
Move furniture periodically when practical.
Rotate your rug to distribute pressure.
Avoid dragging sharp or heavy objects across the surface.
Protecting Your Rug From Sunlight
Extended exposure to direct sunlight can cause some rug colours to fade over time.
To reduce the risk:
Use blinds or curtains during periods of strong sunlight.
Rotate your rug periodically.
Avoid placing delicate rugs in areas exposed to prolonged direct sunlight.
Follow the manufacturer's care recommendations.
Rug Care by Material
Different materials require different levels of care.
Wool Rugs
Wool is naturally durable but should be treated gently. Regular vacuuming and prompt attention to spills can help maintain its appearance.
Jute Rugs
Jute is a natural fibre that should not be excessively saturated with water. Vacuum regularly and blot spills promptly.
Cotton Rugs
Cotton rugs can be relatively easy to maintain, but cleaning requirements vary by construction. Always follow the product's care instructions.
Polyester & Polypropylene Rugs
These materials can be practical choices for busy households, but cleaning methods still vary between products.
Washable Rugs
Always check whether your particular rug is machine washable and follow the washing and drying instructions supplied with the product.
Caring for Your Rug With Pets
Pets can introduce hair, dirt and moisture into your rug.
For pet-friendly rug care:
Vacuum regularly.
Remove pet hair before it becomes embedded.
Deal with accidents immediately.
Avoid excessive moisture.
Use cleaning products appropriate for your rug's material.
Consider a washable or easy-care rug for high-traffic areas.
When Should You Professionally Clean Your Rug?
Regular vacuuming and prompt spot cleaning are important, but some rugs may benefit from professional cleaning from time to time.
Professional cleaning can be particularly useful for:
Heavily soiled rugs
Large rugs that are difficult to clean at home
Delicate or valuable rugs
Rugs with persistent odours
Significant staining
The appropriate cleaning method depends on the rug's material, construction and backing.
